Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

What is weight loss surgery?

Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, refers to a group of medical procedures for people who struggle with extra weight.

Each procedure is unique, but in general, weight loss surgeries limit the amount of room in your stomach and change the way you digest food. This helps you eat and absorb fewer calories and, when combined with healthy lifestyle changes, leads to rapid and sustained weight loss.

At Transform Bariatrics, Dr. Amin performs weight loss surgeries approved by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) to ensure patient safety and excellent results.

The most common weight loss surgery is gastric bypass, but he also performs duodenal switch and single anastomosis duodenoileostomy (SADI), the newest procedure approved by ASMBS.

Dr. Amin uses minimally invasive techniques for weight loss surgery, often performing procedures with the state-of-the-art da Vinci® robotics system. Dr. Amin has performed over 1,200 robotic weight loss procedures, more than any other surgeon in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

Do I qualify for weight loss surgery?

Generally speaking, you may qualify for weight loss surgery if you have:

Extra weight

If you’re 100 pounds over your ideal body weight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, you may qualify for bariatric surgery.

Extra weight with additional health issues

If you’re 35 pounds overweight or have a BMI of 35 or higher and have a weight-related medical issue, you may qualify for bariatric surgery. Common conditions in this category include Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Insurance companies typically use BMI as a guideline for determining surgery candidacy.

What are the benefits of weight loss surgery?

Weight loss surgery can reduce or eliminate chronic health issues, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Patients often experience less joint pain, urinary incontinence, GERD, hormone problems, and relief from many other issues following weight loss as well.

What are the alternatives to weight loss surgery?

If weight loss surgery isn’t right for you, there are several highly effective alternatives available.  Transform Bariatrics offers medical weight loss with prescription medication and lifestyle modifications.

Nonsurgical minimally invasive weight loss procedures, including the Orbera® gastric balloon and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), can give you significant weight loss without incisions.

The Transform Bariatrics team understands that you’ve tried to lose weight many times, but this time can be different with their help. To learn more about weight loss surgery, call the office nearest you or book an appointment online now.
